Poppy/Klaproos

Dsc_5552_klaproos

This was made for one of the members of Tegendraads. She wanted to have poppys, go take a look at all the different poppys on the tegendraads site.  The leaves of the poppy are made of painted silk. Underneath is a photocopy of a picture I took of a poppy. On the copy vliesofix (an adhesive) was ironed and underneath iron-on-interfacing. Then it was crumpled to soften the paper. Some lines were made more apparent with a black finemarker. The red silk was put on top of this and it was sandwiched with batting and fabric. Then with brown thread it was quilted. In the middle some silk was cut away.

earrings

I have been busy attending workshops. On friday Linda Colsh was the teacher and it was all about design with black and white.

The next day Cherilyn Martin taught us to emboss the surface with UTEE. This material needs to be melted and then you can pour it over fabric, stamp it, and more. My best results are these earrings:

when or where sea and land meet

Pictures of the challenge for Artquilts Around the World are due today. The subject is: when or where sea and land meet. I thought of harbours and busy trading. I collected many pictures like these:

I made a scetch of a place in the harbour and inverted this into fabric. It was machinequilted and then silver paintstick was used on the containers to  give a older look. A chain was added to complete the quilt.

postcards

Every now and then I swap postcards. I received a nice red card from Linda with a screenprint on it consisting old houses from Amsterdam. In return I made a postcard for her and I hope it is on time for her birthday:

I made two more, a little bit different:

and then this one, made of leftovers from the rose of last blog:

rose

Last tuesday Tegendraads had its monthly meeting. This time Ria was the lucky one to receive a small quilt from everybody. Her theme was rose or roses and the results are already on the site of Tegendraads. I have been busy  experimenting with crayons, inspired by an article from Quilting Arts Magazine, so that is how this one developed.

this and that

I have made more baskets. I have a total of 94 now, so I am getting somewhere with this ;-) These are the new ones:

I also have been busy making a new quilt for on our couch. Our oldest daughter took a quilt with her to her dorm. So we need a new one. I have shown the fabrics here before. It was too much altogether, so I devided the fabrics in two parts: New York by night and New York by day. Now I have two tops, but it will be one quilt. The tops are waiting to be sandwiched and quilted.

running and waiting

With this quilt I participated in ALQS3, which stands for Another Little Quilt Swap. The quilt is on its way to Julie in England. It measures 21 x 22 inches. The background fabric was dyed, stamped and screenprinted. The newspaperpeople are made of commercial fabric. On top different tulle and organza were added. After machinequilting some tulle was removed.

Kesa

This was the last homework of my course. A Kesa is a blanket excisting of 2 layers and made according to strict rules. It is made by hand. Others have blogged about this already. (Sandra, Patty, Marjon). Mine took some time to be finished.

I decided not to make one for blanket-purposes but to have as decoration. I started with making a batik cloth from silk and cut that according to the kesa-rules. For the in between fabric I choose a painted muslin. I stitched them together using different handstitches. This was done so the kesa can be shown both sides. No backing is used to keep the kesa more transparant. The border is painted silk and consists of two layers.

challenge connections

Stairway_to_heaven Stairway to Heaven part one.

Stairs as a connection between floors, in this case between earth and heaven.

First I painted fabric using batik techniques, piling two fabrics on top of eachother. The one underneath I choose as background for this piece. I added painted lutrador and different colors of tulle and some organza and gauze. Then it was machine quilted. After that I used some paint and paintsticks and removed tiny bits of tulle.

The other piece of fabric will be part two some day.
